Important Reminder
by Doe-Hyung Kim - Monday, 28 September 2009, 11:10 am

Dear CTER Students,

I hope you are having a great semester!

I write to remind you about some important procedures regarding the participation of Elluminate sessions.

First, having a functional microphone is a requirement of being in our online program. Students who completed the online orientation were able to test their microphone and audio setup through the mp3 audio recording activity.

Second, as soon as you log onto Elluminate, you should test your microphone and go through the audio setup wizard if your microphone does not work or if you do not hear any audio. If you are logged in before the course begins, you can request to test your microphone by typing in the textbox. Again, you should only test your microphone in this fashion BEFORE the course begins. If you happen to login after the course begins, you can always test your audio settings in the Audio Setup Wizard. On the toolbar, go to Tools  Audio  Audio Setup Wizard.

The Audio Setup Wizard checks your speaker (output) and microphone (input). Some computers may have more than one input and output method. As a result, you may have to choose the correct input source. If you cannot hear your own voice, you will have to change the input source. Sometimes the source will be labeled as your microphone or “Realtek HD,” “Creative Sound Blaster,” “Via HD,” and etc. These labels are the simply the brand names of audio devices.

Finally, there are indicators that show who is talking or typing.

Participants Window

The screen above is from the Participants screen. The first red arrow points to the microphone icon that is highlighted in yellow. The bubble icon is highlighted when someone is typing a message. These indicators can help you find out who is talking, and if you need to give others control of the microphone after you're done talking.

If you have technical issues, please contact CTER technical support as they will be able to assist you by testing your audio setup through Elluminate test sessions.

Thank you!
